The unleashing of nature's fury: Thunderstorms and their impact on Crisp homes

Immediate impact: Devastating consequences

When thunderstorms unleash their fury upon Crisp homes in Ennis, the consequences are immediate and devastating. The sheer force of heavy rainfall penetrates vulnerable areas, seeping into every nook and cranny of your beloved abode. In moments, water infiltrates through roofs, walls, and even the tiniest cracks, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. The immediate impact of water damage is disheartening, as cherished possessions are soaked, structural integrity is compromised, and the very foundation of your home is under threat. Beyond the visible damage, the potential health hazards and mold growth further compound the distressing situation. Recognizing the gravity of these devastating consequences is crucial in prompting swift action and seeking professional assistance for efficient water damage restoration.

Heavy rainfall: How torrential downpours infiltrate your home

When thunderstorms unleash their fury, the heavy rainfall accompanying them poses a significant threat to the sanctity of your Crisp home. Torrential downpours, fueled by powerful winds, create a relentless assault on your roof, windows, and vulnerable entry points. Even the sturdiest defenses can succumb to the sheer force of the rain, leading to water infiltration into your living spaces. Every gap, crack, or compromised area becomes an entryway for water seeping, gradually passing through ceilings, walls, and flooring. The unrelenting downpour infiltrates your home, leaving no corner untouched and causing widespread damage. The consequences of heavy rainfall are felt throughout your once cozy and dry haven, from damaged ceilings and walls to saturated flooring and belongings. Recognizing your home's vulnerability to these torrential downpours is crucial in understanding the urgency of swift action and professional water damage restoration to mitigate and protect your cherished abode.

Roof leaks: Vulnerable points that allow water to seep in, causing damage and deterioration

Your roof acts as the first line of defense against the elements, shielding your Crisp home from the forces of nature. However, even the most robust roofs can develop vulnerabilities allowing water to seep during thunderstorms. Roof leaks commonly result from damaged or missing shingles, cracked flashing, deteriorated sealants, or compromised roof structures. These vulnerable points become gateways for water intrusion, allowing it to penetrate your home's interior. Once inside, the water can wreak havoc on ceilings, walls, and insulation, causing visible damage and promoting hidden deterioration. Over time, untreated roof leaks lead to structural issues, weakening the integrity of your home and potentially causing further damage. Recognizing the risks associated with roof leaks is essential in addressing the underlying issues and preventing further water damage and deterioration.

Flooding: The risk of water entering your home and its damaging effects on structures and belongings

Flooding is one of the most significant risks for Crisp homes in Ennis. As water levels rise rapidly, the potential for water to enter your home becomes a harsh reality. Flooding can infiltrate through doors, windows, and even the most minor cracks in your foundation.

Structurally, flooding can compromise the foundation, walls, and floors, leading to structural instability and costly repairs. The prolonged exposure to water weakens building materials, promoting rot, mold growth, and the deterioration of structural components. Electrical systems may also be compromised, posing additional safety hazards.

The effects on your personal belongings can be equally devastating. Furniture, appliances, and sentimental items are susceptible to water damage, warping, staining, and total loss. Additionally, the prolonged presence of water creates an ideal breeding ground for mold and bacteria, further compromising the integrity of your possessions and potentially posing health risks.

Understanding the risks associated with flooding is crucial in preparing for and mitigating its damaging effects. Prompt action, including water extraction, drying, and professional restoration services, is essential to minimize the long-term consequences of flooding on your home's structures and cherished belongings.

Structural breaches: The potential for compromised foundations, walls, and floors due to water damage

When thunderstorms unleash their wrath, your Crisp home in Ennis's structural integrity can be tested. Water damage from heavy rainfall poses a significant risk to the foundation, walls, and floors that uphold your dwelling.

Foundations, typically built to withstand the test of time, can become compromised when exposed to excessive moisture. The soil saturation surrounding the foundation can cause it to shift or settle, leading to cracks and structural instability. This compromised foundation puts the entire structure of your home at risk.

Walls and floors are vulnerable to water damage. Prolonged exposure to moisture can lead to swelling, warping, and deterioration of building materials. Paint may peel, drywall may crumble, and wooden structures may rot.

The potential consequences of structural breaches due to water damage are severe. In extreme cases, they include compromised stability, sagging floors, and even structural collapse. Recognizing the risks and taking immediate action to address water damage is crucial to prevent further deterioration and maintain the structural integrity of your cherished home.

Health hazards: The growth of mold and the associated health concerns resulting from water intrusion

When water infiltrates your Crisp home in Ennis, it creates an environment conducive to mold growth, posing significant health risks for you and your loved ones. Mold spores, microscopic particles in the air, can flourish in damp, humid conditions, especially after water intrusion.

The mold growth can occur within 24 to 48 hours of water damage, spreading rapidly throughout your home. As mold colonies multiply, they release spores into the air, which can be inhaled, triggering various health issues. Mold exposure can be particularly concerning for individuals with respiratory conditions, allergies, or compromised immune systems.

Mold exposure can lead to various health concerns, including allergic reactions, respiratory problems, and skin irritations. Symptoms may include coughing, sneezing, wheezing, nasal congestion, throat irritation, and itchy or watery eyes. Prolonged exposure to mold spores can exacerbate existing respiratory conditions and even lead to asthma or other respiratory disorders.

Recognizing the health hazards associated with mold growth is crucial in addressing water damage promptly and effectively. Seeking professional water damage restoration services, such as those provided by us, SERVPRO of Ennis/Red Oak, can help mitigate the risks, prevent further mold growth, and create a safe, healthy living environment for you and your family.

Long-term consequences: Neglected water damage

In the aftermath of thunderstorms and water intrusion, the immediate impact of water damage may seem overwhelming. However, the repercussions extend far beyond the initial chaos. Neglected water damage in Crisp homes can lead to long-term consequences that affect your beloved abode's structural integrity, safety, and value. The unseen damage and hidden dangers lurking beneath the surface can gradually deteriorate your home, impacting its resilience and peace of mind. This section delves into the long-term consequences of neglected water damage, highlighting the risks of mold infestation, structural deterioration, electrical issues, health concerns, and increased repair costs. Understanding these far-reaching effects underscores the importance of proactive measures and professional water damage restoration to safeguard your home from the potential hazards that lie ahead.

Mold infestation: The risks of unaddressed moisture and mold growth

One of the most significant risks associated with neglected water damage in Crisp homes is the potential for mold infestation. Mold thrives in environments with excessive moisture and darkness, making it a common consequence of unaddressed water intrusion.

When water damage is left unattended, the lingering moisture becomes a breeding ground for mold spores to flourish. These tiny organisms can spread rapidly, infiltrating walls, ceilings, and hidden spaces. As mold colonies grow, they release spores into the air, posing severe health risks to you and your family.

The presence of mold compromises the structural integrity of your home and triggers a range of health concerns. Mold exposure can lead to respiratory problems, allergic reactions, and other adverse effects. Individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions, allergies, or weakened immune systems are particularly susceptible to these risks. Mold infestation can cause damage to building materials, such as wood rot. It can also stain surfaces, emit unpleasant odors, and degrade your home's overall indoor air quality.

Recognizing the risks of mold infestation from neglected water damage underscores the importance of prompt action and professional water damage restoration. By addressing moisture issues and mitigating mold growth, you can safeguard the health and structural integrity of your Crisp home for the long term.

Structural deterioration: How water damage weakens the integrity of your home

When water damage goes unaddressed in Crisp homes, the structural integrity of your cherished abode is put at risk. The prolonged presence of moisture from leaking roofs, flooding, or hidden plumbing issues can lead to severe structural deterioration over time.

Wood, a common building material, is highly susceptible to water damage. As it absorbs moisture, it swells, warps, and eventually begins to rot. This compromises the stability of load-bearing structures such as beams, columns, and joists, leading to sagging floors, weakened walls, and potential collapse.

Water damage affects other building materials, such as drywall. When exposed to moisture, drywall becomes weakened, softens, and may crumble or develop mold. Insulation loses effectiveness when soaked, compromising energy efficiency and promoting mold growth. Masonry materials can deteriorate, crack, or erode due to water intrusion.

The gradual deterioration of these vital components weakens the overall stability of your home, posing safety risks for you and your family. It also leads to costly repairs and renovations to restore your cherished property's structural integrity and value.

Recognizing the potential for structural deterioration resulting from unaddressed water damage is crucial. Taking immediate action with our professional water damage restoration services ensures that the integrity of your Crisp home is preserved, providing a safe and secure living environment for years to come.

Electrical issues: The dangers of compromised electrical systems

Water is an excellent conductor of electricity, and when it comes into contact with live electrical components, it creates a hazardous situation. Even small amounts of moisture can cause short circuits, power surges, and electrical fires. Water damage may affect outlets, switches, circuit breakers, and other electrical fixtures, leading to malfunctions, power outages, or electrocution hazards.

Moreover, the presence of water in electrical systems can result in hidden damage. Moisture can corrode wires, terminals, and connections over time, causing them to become unreliable or fail altogether. This compromises the integrity of your electrical system and increases the risk of electrical malfunctions or fires.

Attempting to address electrical issues without professional expertise can be extremely dangerous. It is essential to engage the services of licensed electricians and water damage restoration specialists, like SERVPRO of Ennis/Red Oak, who can assess the extent of the damage, safely address electrical concerns, and restore the functionality of your home's electrical systems.

Health concerns: The potential respiratory problems caused by mold and dampness

When water damage is neglected in Crisp homes, mold, and dampness can lead to serious health concerns, particularly affecting respiratory health. Mold spores can be inhaled from the air, triggering allergic reactions and respiratory issues. Individuals with asthma, allergies, or weakened immune systems are especially vulnerable to these risks. Prolonged exposure to mold and damp environments can exacerbate existing respiratory conditions and contribute to the development of new ones. Addressing water damage promptly and effectively is crucial in safeguarding the health and well-being of you and your loved ones.

Increased repair costs: The financial burden of delayed restoration efforts

Neglected water damage can quickly escalate into a costly affair. Delaying restoration efforts allows water to permeate the structure of your Crisp home further, causing extensive damage that requires more extensive repairs. The longer water damage goes unaddressed, the more it compromises the integrity of building materials, leading to additional deterioration and the need for costly replacements. Mold growth, electrical issues, and structural instability all contribute to the increasing repair costs. By taking immediate action to mitigate water damage and engaging professional restoration services, you can minimize the financial burden and ensure that your Crisp home is restored efficiently and cost-effectively.

Hail, another troublemaker in Crisp homes

The fury of hailstorms: Battling the unpredictable attack

When it comes to the forces of nature, hailstorms stand as a testament to their unpredictable and destructive power. Crisp homes in Ennis become the battlegrounds where nature's fury is unleashed as ice pellets of varying sizes rain down from the sky. The impact of hailstones can cause severe damage to roofs, windows, and other vulnerable areas of your cherished abode. We delve into the immediate and long-term consequences of hailstorms, highlighting the risks of structural damage, compromised exteriors, shattered windows, and the invaluable role SERVPRO of Ennis/Red Oak plays in providing expert water damage restoration services.

Impact damage: How hailstones cause immediate damage to your roof and exterior

When a hailstorm strikes, the impact of hailstones on your Crisp home in Ennis can be immediate and devastating. Hailstones vary in size, ranging from small pellets to large, golf ball-sized projectiles, and they can cause significant damage to your roof and exterior.

Roofs, especially those made of shingles or tiles, are particularly vulnerable to hail damage. The forceful impact of hailstones can crack, dent, or dislodge roofing materials, compromising their ability to provide adequate protection. This leaves your roof susceptible to water intrusion and subsequent water damage.

Seeking professional assistance, such as the services offered by SERVPRO of Ennis/Red Oak, can help assess the extent of the damage, provide expert repairs, and prevent further water damage resulting from compromised roofing and exteriors.

Roof vulnerability: The risk of compromised shingles and leaks

During hailstorms, the risk of roof damage and subsequent water intrusion becomes a pressing concern for Crisp homes in Ennis. With their forceful impact, Hailstones can compromise the integrity of shingles, tiles, and other roofing materials. They can cause cracks, dents, or even dislodge roof sections, creating vulnerabilities that allow water to seep. These compromised shingles increase the risk of leaks, resulting in water damage to your home's interior, including ceilings, walls, and belongings. Recognizing the vulnerability of your roof to hail damage emphasizes the importance of timely inspections and professional repairs to restore its protective barrier and prevent further water damage.

Window damage: The potential for shattered or broken windows

Hailstorms pose a significant risk to the integrity of windows in Crisp homes. The sheer impact of hailstones can cause windows to shatter or suffer from cracks, compromising their functionality and exposing your home to the elements. Broken windows expose your home to water intrusion, compromise security, and increase the risk of further damage. Moreover, shattered glass fragments can pose safety hazards to you and your family. Recognizing the potential for window damage during hailstorms underscores the need for immediate assessment and replacement by professionals experienced in handling such situations. Prompt window repairs and replacements safeguard your home from water damage and restore its security and peace of mind.

Structural compromise: How hail can weaken the integrity of your home's exterior

Hailstorms can compromise the structural integrity of your Crisp home's exterior, posing significant risks to its stability and durability. The forceful impact of hailstones can cause structural damage beyond surface-level aesthetics.

Siding, stucco, and other exterior materials can suffer from dents, cracks, or punctures as hailstones relentlessly batter your home. These vulnerabilities affect the visual appeal and expose your home to potential water intrusion and subsequent water damage.

The compromised exterior can lead to further deterioration over time. Moisture can seep into the underlying structures, causing rot, decay, and compromising the overall strength of the building. This weakened integrity risks your home, especially during future storms or adverse weather conditions.

Engaging the expertise of SERVPRO of Ennis/Red Oak can help assess the extent of the damage, provide necessary repairs, and fortify your home's exterior against future hailstorms. By addressing structural vulnerabilities promptly, you can ensure the longevity and resilience of your Crisp home.

Water infiltration: The entry points for water to seep into your home

Hailstorms pose a significant risk of water infiltration, as the forceful impact of hailstones can create entry points for water to seep into your Crisp home in Ennis. Understanding these potential vulnerabilities is crucial in preventing water damage and protecting the integrity of your living spaces.

Roofing systems are particularly susceptible to water infiltration during hailstorms. Damaged or compromised shingles, cracked flashing, or loose roofing materials provide an easy pathway for water to enter. These entry points allow water to seep through the roof and penetrate the underlying layers, leading to potential leaks, ceiling damage, and moisture-related issues.

Windows and doors also serve as potential entry points for water during hailstorms. The force of hailstones can cause damage to the seals, frames, or glass panes, creating gaps or cracks that allow water to infiltrate. This can result in water damage to walls, flooring, and other interior components.

Furthermore, any existing exterior vulnerabilities, such as damaged siding, cracks in stucco, or compromised caulking, can become pathways for water to penetrate the structure. Once inside, water can spread through walls, insulation, and other building materials, causing extensive damage and promoting the growth of mold and mildew.

When water damage occurs in your Crisp home, it is crucial to identify and address hidden pockets of moisture to prevent further damage and ensure a thorough cleanup process. At SERVPRO of Ennis/Red Oak, we employ advanced moisture detection techniques to locate and target areas of lingering moisture.

Our trained technicians utilize moisture meters, thermal imaging cameras, and other specialized equipment to assess the extent of water infiltration. By addressing hidden pockets of moisture, we can prevent the onset of mold growth, structural deterioration, and other long-term consequences that may result from lingering moisture.

Drying techniques: Utilizing specialized methods for efficient moisture removal

After water extraction and moisture detection, practical drying is the next crucial step in the water cleanup process. At SERVPRO of Ennis/Red Oak, we employ specialized drying techniques to ensure thorough moisture removal and expedite the restoration of your Crisp home. Our experienced technicians combine influential air movers, dehumidifiers, and other advanced drying equipment to create an optimal drying environment. Simultaneously, our high-capacity dehumidifiers work diligently to extract excess moisture from the air, preventing condensation and further moisture damage. These specialized machines remove moisture from the atmosphere, aiding in the drying process and helping to restore optimal humidity levels. Our technicians continuously monitor temperature, humidity, and moisture levels throughout the drying phase to ensure effective and efficient drying. Adjustments are made to maximize the drying potential and minimize the time required for complete moisture removal.

Additionally, we may employ targeted drying techniques for specific materials or hard-to-reach areas, such as wall cavities or subflooring. These methods ensure that even hidden or susceptible areas are thoroughly dried, reducing the risk of residual moisture and potential long-term damage.

Four common ways that floodwaters cause damage to homes

1/11/2023 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: When flooding damages homes in Corsicana, TX, homeowners can turn to SERVPRO® of Ennis/Red Oak to clean up the water intrusion, remediate the damage, and restore the structure.

SERVPRO of Ennis/Red Oak is the customer’s choice for flood restoration services. A flood is a powerful event that can cause extensive damage to a home or business. Many homes are at risk of flooding. A local river or stream could overflow its banks, or a stalled thunderstorm could cause localized flooding involving only a few houses. The remnants of a hurricane may dump nearly a foot or more of rain in a region that rarely experiences more than an inch or two of rain at a time. The flooding may affect only the garage. A home in a low-lying area may be slowly engulfed by rising waters that fill the structure with only an inch or two of water. In a worst-case scenario, the house could be inundated by several feet of water, causing extensive water damage.

Floodwater differs from water from a burst supply line to the washing machine. Water from the supply line is clean, but floodwater is contaminated with sediment, soil, chemicals, pathogens, and raw sewage. Damage caused by floodwaters creates a complex disaster scene. The cleanup and restoration process is more complicated than removing the water with powerful wet-dry vacuums, eliminating the remaining moisture with industrial-strength dehumidifiers, and replacing unsalvageable flooring. The homeowner must understand the home damage a flood can inflict so that they can be prepared by taking the appropriate steps to protect their property.

How can a flood damage a home?

A flood is a very powerful force that can wreck a home. When flooding occurs, take the following precautions before ever entering a flood-damaged structure:

  • Conduct a visual inspection of the exterior of the home for structural damage.
  • Watch out for downed power lines, broken tree limbs that might have damaged the roof, or hanging limbs that might fall to the ground in a gust of wind.
  • Do a sniff test for gas leaks.
  • If the home had to be evacuated due to the flooding, enter the structure only if it is absolutely safe to do so.

Common examples of flood damage

Flood damage impacts the entire home. The list below addresses some of the most common examples of flood damage:

  • Mold and mildew infestation
  • Appliance damage
  • Electrical and structural damage
  • Septic and well water systems

Mold and mildew

Warmth, moisture, and organic matter such as wood, drywall, clothing, paper, and insulation are abundant during and after a flood. Within 24 to 48 hours, mold and mildew can gain a foothold. By the time the homeowner spots blotches of mold, the infestation is in process. The growth of mold and mildew can be slowed or prevented by removing excess water from the home and running dehumidifiers to dry out the structure. The safest and quickest way to deal with mold and mildew is to hire a team of IICRC-certified flood damage and water damage professionals at SERVPRO of Ennis/Red Oak. They have the powerful equipment needed to remove the water and moisture from the flooded structure. Flood water is filled with pathogens, chemicals, and raw sewage. Delays can lead to advanced secondary damage, including a structure-wide mold and mildew infestation. Due to flooding, the power grid may be down for days or weeks, but the SERVPRO team is prepared with generators to power the cleanup and restoration project.

Appliance damage

Floodwaters can compromise the HVAC system, water heater, refrigerator, and other household appliances. Protect appliances from further damage by shutting off the power at the main breaker. Use the device only after a certified electrician has approved the structure. Do not operate any appliances, including the HVAC system, until the appliances have been properly cleaned, restored, and inspected by reputable professionals.

Structural and electrical damage

Buckled or loose roof sheathing and cracks in the foundation are signs of structural flood damage. Electrical wiring may be frayed. Avoid contact with electrical wiring, outlets, switches, and appliances while standing in water or wearing wet clothes.

Damage to septic and well water systems

During a flood, the septic tank filter may clog with debris from the intake of contaminated floodwater. Schedule an inspection as soon as possible after a flood. Materials carried by the floodwaters can flow into wells, contaminating the well water with sediments, organic debris, and raw sewage. Ensure that the well water is tested and treated before drinking.

Flood Restoration Services for Homes That Have Suffered Water Damage and Structural Damage

10/17/2022 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: SERVPRO of Ennis/Red Oak provides a seven-point checklist to help homeowners determine if their house has suffered structural damage after a flood.

SERVPRO® of Ennis/Red Oak is available 24/7 to provide flood restoration services when disaster strikes. Flooding can devastate a home. Too often, some aspects of the damage escape attention until much later. A thorough inspection of the structure to identify the extent of the damage needs to be conducted in the aftermath of the flooding. Damage usually occurs to either the foundation, the structure resting on the foundation, or both.

Homeowners and prospective buyers should familiarize themselves with the dynamic forces causing the damage. This information will ensure the scope of the inspection will identify flood damage. Flood water moving at a speed of 10 miles per hour can exert the same pressure as a gust of wind blowing at 270 miles per hour. The effects of this dynamic force can cause serious structural damage to a home or other structures.

A checklist to identify structural damage

#1. Inspect the home for damage to the framing structure.

When a house has encountered flood waters, support beams and framing timbers may be affected. The structural integrity may be compromised. The inspection begins by observing the structure from a distance of about 50 to 100 feet. Visually inspect all four sides of the home. The structure may be fully intact. However, the flood waters may have altered the soundness of the structure, thus weakening its overall strength. Consider the following important questions:

  • Does the house appear to be out of kilter? Is it leaning or tilting to the degree it is noticeable?
  • Have large sections of the structure been ripped away or broken?
  • Does the home appear to be squarely positioned on the foundation?
  • Has the house partially shifted off its foundation?

Large-scale misalignments signal trouble with the integrity and strength of the building affected by flood waters.

#2. Look for damage to the roof.

Visible signs of sagging or bowing on the roof are warning signs of a lack of structural integrity in the support beams in the attic or of warping of roof sheathing from exposure to moisture. If the roof has undulations or waves, all is not well under the shingles. Look for new lumps on the roof. Step far away enough from the home to be able to see if any portions of the roofing are missing or rolled up like a rug. Are shingles, pieces of plywood, or strips of underlayment strewn across the yard in hanging bushes and shrubs? When a home has been exposed to the dynamic forces of a flood, rafters and trusses in the attic can crack, splinter, or break. If flood waters were intense, venturing into the attic could be dangerous.

#3. Pay close attention to the fireplace and chimney.

  • If the fireplace or chimney leans or has a bow, structural damage may be the cause.
  • Look for gaps where the chimney has separated from the side of the house.
  • Pay special attention to any cracked bricks, broken stones, or loose material.
  • Inspect the base of the chimney for a concentration of displaced mortar, shards of brick, or unexplained rocks or stones.

#4. Examine exterior walls.

Exterior walls tell a story. Warping, bowing, cracks, and ripples in the walls indicate stress from a flood dynamic. Corners should be vertical and straight. Is the wall attached to the roof? Is the wall seated securely on the foundation?

#5. Give special consideration to ceilings and floors.

  • If the floors or ceilings sag or droop, it does not bode well for the home.
  • Soft, spongy floors underfoot indicate water damage.
  • Warping, sloping, or bowing that is new is a sign of flood damage.

#6. Include windows and doors in the inspection.

Look closely for gaps at the doors and windows. Windows and doors that stick or fail to open or close hint at structural damage from flooding or excess water. Test self-opening doors and windows for functionality. Scraping or dragging indicates a problem.

#7. The basement may hold many clues to the extent of water damage.

Be sure to use a flashlight when inspecting the basement. The lighting may be inadequate, resulting in shadows and glare, which makes spotting evidence of damage very difficult.

Look for:

  • Cracks, bows, or waves in the walls
  • Concave or convex shapes in the basement walls
  • Bowing, cracking, or twisting of any beam or posts that are providing support to the floor above

This checklist will help homeowners identify structural damage from floodwater. When disaster strikes, turn to the professionals at SERVPRO® of Ennis/Red Oak for assistance. Certified technicians bring state-of-the-art equipment and cleaning techniques to every challenging situation.

Nine Tips for Maximizing Hurricane Damage Insurance Claims

5/23/2022 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: Hurricane damage can be devastating to homeowners. SERVPRO of Ennis/Red Oak is highlighting tips to help people make the most of insurance claims and recover from storm damage.

SERVPRO of Ennis/Red Oak cautions homeowners that not all water damage disasters are equal in the eyes of the insurance company. If the water damage was caused by a flood, a homeowners policy probably does not cover the disaster. The homeowner needs to be aware of potential insurance issues. Below are nine important tips to help the homeowner maximize insurance claim payouts for hurricane damages and utilize other assistance to cover losses.

  1. The typical homeowner’s policy does not cover flooding.

The discovery of this coverage limitation surprises many homeowners, especially when the discovery comes after the home has been flooded. The consequences of this oversight can be financially devastating.

Property damage resulting from water, wind, and wind-driven precipitation entering the home through the roof, doors, windows, or openings in the walls most often falls under homeowners insurance coverage. Property damage caused by flooding from the bottom up is not covered. Some examples of damage that are not covered include:

  • Rising water overflowing the banks of a river or stream
  • Overflow from a body of water such as a lake, reservoir, or pond
  • Storm surge from a hurricane
  1. Auto insurance covers flooding.

Comprehensive coverage would include damages to a vehicle caused by flooding. The insurance company may declare the car a total loss, and the car owner would receive a claim payout less the deductible. Beware of buying a used vehicle just after a major hurricane since the market may be flooded with flood-damaged automobiles. Risk hazards can include electrical issues and faulty airbags.

  1. When flooding occurs, immediately inform the insurance company to begin the claim documentation process.
  • Emergency tarping and other minor temporary repairs to limit further damage are encouraged. It is not necessary to wait for an adjuster to arrive on the scene to assess the damage.
  • Record the damage with images and video before making any temporary alterations or repairs. Many digital resources are available to assist the homeowner in the documentation process.
  • Save any receipts for expenses incurred to carry out these temporary repairs. Reimbursements may be available.
  1. Hurricane damage may carry a higher deductible than water, fire, smoke, or sewage backup damages.

Most standard policies cover wind and wind-driven rain damage. Some insurance companies charge separate wind deductibles. The deductibles are usually 5% to 10% of the coverage amount rather than a flat dollar amount. This deductible can be rather painful for the homeowner.

  1. Explore qualifying for other recovery assistance.

A host of nonprofit and governmental agencies at the state level may offer hurricane disaster relief to homeowners. Check out DisasterAssistance.gov or schedule an in-person appointment at a FEMA disaster recovery center.

Hurricane disaster victims may also qualify for SBA Disaster Loan Assistance. This low-interest loan helps renters and homeowners replace or repair damaged property.

  1. Understand limitations for tree damage.

If a tree falls and damages a neighbor’s property, the neighbor can recover some of the damages from their insurance company. If a fallen tree does not do any damage, insurance policies will pay a minimum of $500 to $1,000 for the cleanup and removal.

  1. Living expenses may be covered if the home must be vacated during the restoration and rebuild process.

Living expenses can add up quickly. The insurance company may pay out these expenses before other funds are disbursed, but limits may apply. Rent, food, and utilities may fall within this coverage spectrum.  As always, archive receipts digitally or physically for reimbursement purposes. The insurer may offer a debit card for these expenses.

  1. Inventory possessions to ensure adequate reimbursement.

The task of creating an inventory of the contents in the home may prove to be a chore. A current inventory of household possessions will prove beneficial in the event of a disaster. Include images and videos of rooms, closets, and other storage areas. Store the information on the cloud or offsite. The photos and video will serve to validate the inventory. If possible, include images or hard copies of the original receipts for valuable items. Before removing any debris, archive the scene with pictures and video.

  1. Hire a property damage cleanup and restoration company that takes care of the claims process from start to end.

SERVPRO of Ennis/Red Oak inspects and assesses the damage scene and creates a detailed estimate, including images and video. Experienced staff competently provide end-to-end claims management, relieving the customer of anxiety and stress. Attention can be focused on recovery from weathering severe weather or a hurricane.

In fact, by pre-qualifying a water damage restoration company before a disaster strikes, the homeowner needs to make only two calls, one to the insurance company notifying them of the incident and the other to the damage restoration company.

Tips for Talking to Children About Severe Weather, Flooding, and Storm Damage

3/15/2022 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: SERVPRO of Ennis/Red Oak offers six tips for helping parents and guardians talk to young children about storms and flood damage.

SERVPRO of Ennis/Red Oak is dedicated to providing homeowners and businesses with the flood damage restoration services needed to quickly and efficiently return life to normal. The team understands how disruptive and stressful damage from a flood or severe weather can be. Water and flood damage also impacts children in the home. Some of a child’s most precious possessions may be lost, damaged, or destroyed. The restoration specialists at SERVPRO of Ennis/Red Oak will clean and restore a child’s beloved toy with the same skill and attention to detail paid to any other valued item.

How to Help Children Understand and Process Storm Damage

News reports on the radio, television and social media bring the human impact of natural disasters up close and personal, even if the events occurred in places hundreds or thousands of miles away. The vivid images can cause children to become anxious and fearful about their own safety.

Jessika Boles, Ph.D., CCLS, a child life specialist for the Pediatric Critical Care Unit at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt University, offers a professional perspective, writing, “Much like adults, children find comfort in routines and regularity. When these are threatened by unpredictable and uncontrollable natural disasters, like hurricanes, a child’s first concern is often about his or her own safety – even when the actual disaster may be a world away. But, when given opportunities to talk about the event and process their feelings in familiar ways, even young children can manage and cope with the stress of a natural disaster.”

The practical tips listed below are intended to help parents and guardians have understandable, meaningful, and encouraging discussions with children about severe weather and storm damage.

Tip #1: Have a conversation on the child’s level using clear and descriptive language.

Violent thunderstorms, massive flooding, devastating tornadoes, and destructive hurricanes may be unfamiliar concepts to little children. They may also not realize the different scope of each event. For example, a thunderstorm may last for fifteen minutes, while a hurricane or tropical storm may linger for days. Parents can help children by defining each event and clarifying the differences in clear, age-appropriate language.

Tip #2: Talk about safety.

Although severe weather and storm damage are inevitable and unpreventable, children are less fearful when they know precautions are in place. Turn the formulation of a family safety and survival plan into a group activity that builds confidence and helps a child feel secure. The simple act of identifying what to do in a disaster can overcome fear. Creating a disaster survival kit with emergency food and water supply, a radio, flashlights, batteries, and a favorite stuffed animal or soft blanket can help a child cope with the unknown and the unpredictable.

Tip #3. Avoid overwhelming the child with information.

Err on the side of moderation. An information overload of explicit images, traumatic videos, disturbing audio, and emotional eye-witness accounts will most likely overwhelm a child’s delicate sensibilities. Information is empowering, but continuous exposure to traumatic news reports about the disaster and the human suffering it has caused can be detrimental to children. Overexposure can result in a child experiencing unhealthy levels of anxiety, stress, frustration, and fear, depending on the child’s psychological state. Interrupt the constant barrage of bad news with a variety of good and encouraging news and entertainment. By turning off the television, computer, or phone, a parent or guardian can give children a healthy sense of control over the flow of information about the natural disaster.

Tip #4: Encourage children to express their emotions.

Let children know it is acceptable to experience fear, anger, or confusion. Help them cope with these emotions through mediums such as structured play and art to stimulate conversation.

Tip #5: Provide opportunities to get involved.

Positive involvement in disaster relief efforts through donations of time, clothing, food, and money can give children a sense that they are helping overcome the challenges associated with a natural disaster. By being part of a large community effort, children can take confidence that the community will be there for them should a disaster disrupt their lives.

Tip #6: Pre-qualify a restoration company and involve the entire family in the process.

Trust the restoration experts at SERVPRO of Ennis/Red Oak for storm damage restoration and flood restoration services. Let the children know a team of highly trained, well-equipped, and caring professionals are available 24/7 to provide emergency cleanup and restoration services in the event of storm damage. For older, mature children, consider adding SERVPRO of Ennis/Red Oak to their cell phone contacts.

How to Choose a Roofing Contractor and a Damage Restoration Company after Storm Damage

11/2/2021 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: SERVPRO of Ennis/Red Oak advises homeowners about what to do when a storm or severe weather damages the roof.

Storm damage in Corsicana, TX, can involve many different types of property damage, including damage to the roof and the accompanying water damage. Like its sister cities of Ennis and Red Oak, Corsicana sees its fair share of severe weather. The thunderstorms that roll through the area bring heavy rain, hail, high winds, and an occasional Texas twister. This severe weather often causes roof damage and water intrusion.

Signs of Storm Damage to the Roof

When severe weather rumbles through the region, homeowners should look for the following signs that may indicate roof damage:

  • dislodged and missing shingles
  • visible granule loss on the shingles
  • visible evidence of water intrusion in the attic or on the ceiling and floor under the attic
  • loose debris on the roof and in the yard, including broken limbs, fallen trees, yard furniture, and debris from the neighbor’s yard
  • clogged or broken gutters and downspouts

What to Do When Storms Cause Water Damage

When it becomes obvious that the severe weather has damaged the roof and caused a water intrusion, immediately contact a property damage restoration company and a roofing contractor. While waiting for these teams to arrive, take the following steps to protect the home and belongings.

  1. Move furniture, personal belongings, electrical devices, and other valuables to a safe location. If an item cannot be moved, it should be covered with a tarp or sheet of plastic.
  2. Put buckets under areas where water is leaking through the ceiling. Take a sharp pencil, ice pick, or nail and make a small hole in the ceiling to allow water to flow freely out of the ceiling into a container.
  3. Mop up any water on the floor to prevent slip-and-fall injuries.
  4. Carefully unplug any electronics or electrical devices that might be damaged or cause electrical shock to humans or pets.

Tips for Choosing a Roofing Contractor

When hiring a roofing contractor, consider the following recommendations from the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety (IBHS) and the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA): “Check for a permanent place of business, telephone number, tax I.D. number and, where required, a business license. Request verification of professional liability insurance. Look for a company with a proven track record; ask for and check client references and request a list of completed projects. Verify whether the contractor is properly licensed or bonded. Insist on a written proposal. The proposal should include complete descriptions of the work and specifications, including approximate start and completion dates and payment procedures. Check to see if the contractor is a member of any regional or national industry associations, such as NRCA. Call your local Better Business Bureau to check for any complaints that have been filed. Have the contractor explain his project supervision and quality control procedures. Carefully read and make sure you understand any roofing warranty offered; watch for provisions that would void the warranty. Remember, price is only one criterion for selecting a roofing contractor. Professionalism and quality workmanship also should weigh heavily on your decision.”

Tips for Choosing a Property Damage Restoration Company

When selecting a property damage restoration company for a water damage disaster, look for the following:

  • 24/7 availability and a rapid response time - Every minute of delay allows for the water damage to progress in severity. A delay in emergency tarping can allow hundreds of gallons of water to pour into a home, adding tens of thousands of dollars to the scope of restoration work.
  • Licensed, bonded, and insured
  • Solid reviews on social media and references
  • Locally owned and operated
  • Experienced, trained, and certified water damage restoration technicians
  • Advanced equipment, cutting-edge water-detection technology, the latest cleaning techniques, EPA-approved cleaning products
  • An initial inspection and assessment that results in an outline of the scope of work, a timeline, an estimate of costs, and full documentation, including photos
  • A member of a reputable franchise - As a franchisee, the owner must meet credentialing and qualifying standards in the areas of job performance, customer satisfaction, employee training, and adherence to other corporate policies.

Quality of installation is foundational when choosing a roofing contractor; quality of cleanup and restoration is foundational when choosing a property damage restoration company. Unlike roofing services, property damage restoration touches people at the point of crisis. SERVPRO professionals often encounter homeowners who need compassion and encouragement, as well as property damage restoration.

How Statistics About Tornadoes in Texas Can Help Red Oak Residents Prepare For Severe Weather

5/7/2021 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: SERVPRO of Ennis / Red Oak highlights important tornado statistics that can help Red Oak residents and businesses maintain awareness about severe weather and the property damage it causes.

SERVPRO of Ennis / Red Oak is the premier water damage restoration company in the Red Oak community. Red Oak is in a region of Texas that experiences severe weather, including tornadoes that often cause water damage.

Texas Tornado Statistics Tell a Tragic Story

Each year, about 132 tornadoes strike somewhere in Texas, causing massive property damage that requires the services of property damage restoration companies. The high winds wreak havoc on roofs, resulting in water damage and mold infestation.

From year to year, the tornado totals see some variation. Certain regions are more prone to be visited by tornadic weather than other regions in the state. The Red River Valley owns the distinction of being the tornado alley of Texas. This North Texas area is pummeled more frequently by tornadoes than any other region in the state. Ennis and Red Oak lie within this region of heightened tornadic activity.

No month of the year is immune from the severe weather that generates tornadoes, including December and January, the coldest months of the year. Tornadoes can appear at any hour of the day or night. Nighttime tornadoes are particularly dangerous because most Texas residents are asleep and unaware of the approaching storm.

Meteorologists have determined that tornadic activity is concentrated during the late spring and early summer months, from April through June. Texas twisters typically occur during the hours of 4:00 pm and 8:00 pm.

In the sixty years from 1951 to 2011, nearly two-thirds of all Texas tornadoes struck in three months — April, May, and June. May is the most tornado-prone month of the year, and one in three tornadoes strike Texas in the month of May.

More twisters are recorded in Texas than in any other state in the USA, including Oklahoma. This title is probably due to the state’s massive size relative to other nearby states.

According to the Texas Almanac, “The greatest outbreak of tornadoes on record in Texas was associated with Hurricane Beulah in September 1967. Within a five-day period, Sept. 19–23, 115 known tornadoes, all in Texas, were spawned by this great hurricane. Sixty-seven occurred on Sept. 20, a Texas record for a single day. In addition to Hurricane Beulah’s 115 tornadoes, there were another 9 tornadoes in September for a total of 124, which is a Texas record for a single month. The greatest number of tornadoes in Texas in a single year is 232, also in 1967. The second-highest number in a single year is 1995 when 223 tornadoes occurred in Texas.”

As mentioned above, May is an active month for tornadoes. Texas saw its worst outbreak of spring tornadoes in its history in May of 1982, and meteorologists identified 123 tornadoes. On average, May experiences a little over thirty-nine tornadoes per month, making it the most potentially dangerous month of the year. January experiences the least number of tornadoes on average at 2.3 tornadic events per month.

On December 29, 2006, Texans faced a rare outbreak of winter twisters. Twenty-seven tornadoes rumbled through the Lone Star State, the largest monthly total for December on record. December averages about three tornadoes per month.

According to data compiled from the National Weather Service, the top ten deadliest tornadoes in the history of Texas have accounted for 563 fatalities and 3,447 injuries.

Tornado Statistics Teach Helpful Lessons

Understanding the timing and frequency of tornadic activity, as well as the capacity of tornadoes to cause storm damage to homes and businesses, can give some helpful insight on how to prepare for a tornado and how to respond when a tornado causes storm damage to a structure.

Here are some tips on how to be prepared for a tornado:

  1. Always stay alert, especially during the months of April, May, and June. Two-thirds of all tornadoes occur during these months, and one-third of all Texas tornadic events happen in May.
  2. Storm conditions are at their height between the hours of 4:00 pm and 8:00 pm. When there is a weather alert during these hours, know that the conditions are just right for a tornado to develop in association with severe weather.
  3. Sign up to receive NOAA weather alerts on all devices.
  4. Purchase a weather radio. Make sure that everyone in the home or business knows how to use it.
  5. Prepare a storm disaster survival plan with the entire family. Business owners should prepare a disaster response plan for their employees. The professionals at SERVPRO of Ennis/Red Oak often work with businesses to formulate a Ready Plan to deal with storm damage, water damage, and fire and smoke damage resulting from a property damage disaster.
  6. Prepare a severe weather survival kit and refresh it before peak tornado season arrives in late March and early April. The kit should include LED flashlights and plenty of batteries, first aid items, food, water, important documentation and contact information, rubber gloves, tarps, duct tape, rope, and a basic tool kit.
  7. Designate a safe room or sheltered area in the home. Practice tornado drills with the family at different times during the day and night.
  8. Pre-qualify a property damage restoration company before disaster strikes. Searching for a storm damage or water damage restoration professional at 3:00 am in the middle of a chaotic situation only adds to the stress and anxiety of the ordeal.

The property damage restoration experts at SERVPRO of Ennis/Red Oak are ready to help residents and businesses deal with water damage in Red Oak and Ennis. Available 24/7, 365 days a year, the team can respond within an hour or less. Certified technicians utilize the latest equipment, advanced technology, and proven cleaning and restoration techniques to quickly restore a property to its original pre-damage condition.

How Storm Power Outages Can Lead to Crawl Space and Basement Flooding and Water Damage

3/3/2021 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: SERVPRO of Ennis / Red Oak reminds homeowners that power outages during severe weather can cause a sump pump to fail, which can cause water damage in the crawl space or basement.

Since 2000, SERVPRO of Ennis / Red Oak has been serving the local community with water, fire, and storm damage restoration. Centrally located in Ellis County, the damage restoration teams can reach any location in the area in less than thirty minutes. The local company is backed by a nationwide system of qualified franchises, specializing in residential, commercial, and large-scale disaster clean-up and restoration.

Everything in Texas is big, including the thunderstorms that rumble through the North Texas region during the spring, summer, and fall. Occasionally, turbulent weather will pay a visit to the area during a warm spell in the winter months, as experienced on December 26, 2015, when ten or more tornadoes pummeled North Texas. Typically, April and May are the most active months for severe weather.

A severe weather “watch” means to keep an eye out for potentially severe weather conditions. A “warning” means severe weather conditions are in the area. The “r” in the word “warning” is a cue to homeowners to run for cover or to retreat to shelter in a protected area or safe room in the home. Once a warning has been issued by the National Weather Service, only minutes or seconds may separate tranquility from turmoil during periods of severe weather.

High winds, hail, heavy rain, and lightning can potentially cause a power outage. High winds may break off limbs or topple trees, which can break power lines. Flash flooding may bring down the power grid along a river or creek basin. Lightning strikes may take out telephone poles, transformers, or substations resulting in the loss of power for large portions of the local Ennis and Red Oak population. In any case, severe weather and power outages can be disastrous.

Some of the consequences related to severe weather and a power outage include:

  • slip-and-fall injuries in the dark or on wet pavement or decking
  • electrical shock from appliances, electronics, or power cords during a major water intrusion from a flood or from severe damage to the roof or other portion of the structure
  • heart issues resulting from stress and anxiety over the power outage
  • back issues, joint injuries, or muscle strains from moving heavy debris, furniture, or water-logged floorcoverings
  • medical complications arising from the loss of power to life-sustaining medical equipment

A serious consequence of a power outage is the loss of power to a sump pump in the basement or crawl space. Typically, sump pumps are installed in a sump pit where water collects from a foundation drainage system that directs intruding water to the pit. The sump pump evacuates unwanted water, keeping the basement or crawlspace dry. Most sump pumps operate on electricity, so a power outage can be disastrous. A crawl space or basement can flood very quickly when the sump pump is not operational. Sometimes a sump pump may lose power even though the home or business has power.

In any case, having multiple contingency plans in the event of a sump pump failure is worth the time, effort, and expense. Flooding in the basement and crawl space can lead to damage to or the loss of valuable property, structural damage to the foundation, mold infestation, health effects related to the mold, and expensive water removal and restoration costs.

According to insurance industry experts, “One way to prevent sump pump failure during a power outage is to have a battery backup for your sump pump, which will keep the pump running even if your power is out. In addition to battery sump pump backups, some pumps also have water-powered backup systems that use your home’s water supply to remove water from the sump pit.”

Some homeowners install an additional sump pump with its own backup power system to ensure any water intrusion can be managed. Not all insurance companies cover water damage resulting from a sump pump failure. Special coverage must be purchased at an additional cost. Homeowners should check with their insurance agent for options and expenses. Some insurance companies may require a backup plan that includes the installation of a reserve system with its own power source, such as a generator.

Homeowners need to regularly test the sump pump by pouring a bucket or two of water into the sump pit. The pump should immediately spring to life and drain the water from the sump pit. Before pouring water into the pit, clean out any debris or dirt that might clog the system.

If the worst-case scenario — a flooded basement or crawl space — becomes a reality, immediately contact a qualified water damage restoration expert to take care of the problem. Water damage grows worse with every passing minute. Advanced secondary water damage may add days and many dollars to the overall expense of the restoration work. Also, insurance companies may look unfavorably upon lengthy delays in securing property damage restoration services, especially for water damage. Pre-qualifying a water and storm damage restoration company when the days are sunny can save hours when it is dark, the rain is coming down in torrents, and the basement or crawl space is flooding.

The water damage restoration experts at SERVPRO of Ennis / Red Oak are available 24/7, 365 days a year. IICRC-certified technicians have the equipment, training, and experience to tackle any size disaster.

Prepare for Winter Weather to Avoid Costly Damage

11/3/2020 (Permalink)

Is Your Property Ready for Old Man Winter?

The mild weather we’ve been blessed with these past few months may have us lulled into an unrealistic sense of security, believing that a mild or even balmy winter lies ahead. However, it doesn’t take a major ice storm to do damage to your house -- normal winter weather with long durations of moisture and ice can cause problems, too. When the worst happens and you need immediate service to rescue your property and prevent further damage, rest assured that SERVPRO of Ennis/Red Oak is ready to respond.

We all hope to be spared from accidents caused by severe winter storms or the damage that can result from wet, icy weather conditions. Read on for suggestions to help you be prepared for that icy onslaught.

  • Check regularly on weather reports and warnings for upcoming freezing weather and winter storms. Being informed ahead of severe weather gives you an advantage.
  • Early in the season, have your heating system checked by a professional HVAC company. At the very least, change your filters. Don’t wait until a frigid day to find out that your heating system doesn’t work.
  • To prevent damage to the outside of your home, paint, caulk, and seal wood structures. Replacing trim later, after moisture has caused rot, will be a lot more expensive than doing this preventative maintenance.
  • Even your masonry and concrete surfaces can be damaged by freezing moisture. Inspect your patio and other concrete structures and apply a winter sealant to keep out the moisture that causes damage.
  • Clean your rain gutters. The leaves falling in autumn, as well as other debris that falls from trees during summer can clog your gutters causing rain to back up and overflow. The overflow can cause moisture to build up under the shingles around the perimeter of your roof, causing wood rot. It also runs down the walls of your home, causing damage to your masonry and foundation.
  • Make sure all the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors throughout your home are in good working order and have fresh batteries. Winter is the time most home fires occur due to home heaters, fireplace fires, and holiday decorations. This is a good time to take stock of your fire extinguishers and have annual maintenance done on them.
  • Hire a reliable company to clean and inspect your fireplace and chimney before building that first cozy fire. Make sure you have brought in a fresh stock of firewood and store it at a safe distance from wood structures. Inspecting any old firewood for deterioration will give you the opportunity to spot signs of wood-damaging insects.
  • Prepare pools, sprinkler systems, and outside water faucets for freezing weather. Using professional services for the pool and sprinkler system is well worth the cost. Draining and blowing out lines to prevent pipes bursting during a freeze is far less expensive than having to replace them in the spring. Also drain outside faucets, as they are completely exposed to nasty freezes and can cause major damage if a faucet line bursts and floods the inside of your home.
  • Check any trees near your home. Branches that are too near the house can cause damage when they become ice-coated and brush against the siding and windows. Trees that are dead or dying can fall during snow and ice storms, causing major damage to your house or your neighbors. Dead trees should be removed.

Preparing in advance for winter’s worst can help to prevent damage to your property due to wear or accidents. But when a damaging event does occur despite your best efforts, be assured SERVPRO of Ennis/Red Oak is prepared to rush to your assistance. We can quickly remediate damage caused by water, fire, or smoke, and help to make your property “Like it never even happened.”

Reduce Potential for Storm Damage: Get Your Home Ready

9/2/2019 (Permalink)

Historically, peak storm season typically occurs in the eight weeks surrounding September 10. This is due to the summer warming of oceanic waters and the weakening of wind sheer. The higher air and water temperatures cause storms to drop more precipitation and to last longer, and the lower wind sheer prevents storms being dispersed by the wind. Over the last 70 years storms over land in the North Atlantic and Western North Pacific have slowed by 20 to 30 percent. These slower, wetter storms mean more potential water damage. (www.weather.com)

SERVPRO of Ennis / Red Oak technicians are highly trained and ready to rush to your aid in the event that you have water damage due to flooding. But you can reduce the potential for your home to sustain water damage from a storm by doing the following things to get your home ready for the storm and for the possibility of a prolonged power outage after a storm.

  • First check the outside. Make sure rain gutters are clear of debris so water will flow freely and away from the house. Check the roof for soft spots or damaged or missing shingles and make needed repairs. If there are tall trees near your house, make sure the whole tree is stable and if any branches overhang the house, trim them to reduce the chances they might fall and damage the roof, walls, or windows.
  • Secure any outside items, such as patio furniture, umbrellas, and grills, that could be blown by high winds. Move them to an inside location if possible. Anchor any outside fuel tanks.
  • Check that your emergency kit is stocked and readily accessible. It should include items such as non-perishable food, bottled water, flashlights and batteries, blankets, extra sets of clothing, a first aid kit, and any medications needed by the family or pets. A more detailed list of items to include in an emergency kit can be found at www.ready.gov/build-a-kit.
  • If you live in a multi-level home, move what you can to a higher level (especially if your home has a basement). Store important documents (such as, birth certificates and passports) in a safe, dry place. Unplug all electronics, as water and electricity are a dangerous combination.
  • Turn your refrigerator to its coldest setting, or move its contents to the freezer section. This will protect food for a longer time in the event of a power outage.
  • Turn off the gas line to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning or gas leaks.
  • Check your home insurance. Most home owners policies do not cover flood damage. However, with the changes in weather patterns bringing longer, wetter storms, it might be wise to add this type coverage to your policy no matter where you live. Prepare a household inventory, using photos or videos, as this will be critical in processing any insurance claims.
